Health Guardians is an informal education program that involves children as well as parents and teachers who live in marginalized conditions in acquiring self-care habits and strengthening values that ensure children’s healthy growth and development within a framework of gender rights and equality.
Directed at children ages 6-12, this program takes place in six municipalities in the state of Sonora (Bacum, Navojoa, Etchojoa, Huatabampo, Quiriego and Cajeme). 2,737 children participated in 2006.
Our workshops use a methodology of fun. For example, through games, analysis /reflection, experiential dynamics, drawing and acting out stories, for example, children take what they learn with them to their families, schools and communities, formulating action plans that address their specific daily needs.
This program reinforces and motivates children’s creativity, leadership, mental openness, solidarity and enthusiasm, honoring them as the principal actors and promoters of change in themselves and their communities. Their self-motivation and organizing skills function as tools for empowering and validating their rights.
Health Guardians promotes community involvement so that residents and FAI staff work together in activities focused on health, education, economic opportunities and dietary self-sufficiency in communities and in schools.
